The program we use at the Junior high is the Pearson program. The Pearson is a comprehensive program that contains all COMPONENTS of ELA in one book. The ELA block encompasses all topics as follows: writing, reading, grammar. the students will be using many sites to work on language this year.
AR
The students will still be required to complete a number of books for AR just like in the elementary schools. Each level and points will be decided by the teacher and STUDENT together. My goal is to have them enjoy reading not dread it. The students will start the day with 20-30 minutes a day with silent reading. This will allow them to get a head start on their daily read. During this time I will be able to conference with students and work with those who need assistance. The remaining required time will need to be completed at home.
I do have some restrictions but not many. The book needs to be one that they have recently read. They need to read the entire book. Taking test for others or others taking test for them is considered cheating. This will result in a visit to Mr. Hurley.
I will randomly meet with each student for a book check : What book are you reading? What page are you on and how many pages are there in the book? How many points do you have and how many points do you still need? We will also randomly take the number of points we have, subtract from what we need, and divide by how many days are left until the due date . This will show them what their goal should be weekly/daily for their reading. This keeps them on track and shows them that the expectations are not unrealistic.
